What GW and I have in common
Like the president, I'm often criticized about being overly influenced by my father's old buddies. I idealized them as a child, and as an adult I looked them up and sought them out, and they've become a pretty big part of my life. The main critic of this policy is my mom, who thought those guys were a bad influence back when, and she hasn't softened much.
One of them has hired me to build a website for their high school reunion. Check it out if you're bored, so you'll know why I've been so slack with the news. It's got the whole "Youth of the Nation" thing going on (Fox News viewers who click that link will recognize the music if they "play the video").

Wanna be a spy?
Er, I mean, "domestic informant"? The Sydney Morning Herald reports the the US government is seeking to recruit one in every 24 Americans to be citizen spies as part of the Citizen Corp's "Operation Tips". I checked out the official government website for Operation Tips and this is what it says:
Operation TIPS - the Terrorism Information and Prevention System - will be a nationwide program giving millions of American truckers, letter carriers, train conductors, ship captains, utility employees, and others a formal way to report suspicious terrorist activity. Operation TIPS, a project of the U.S. Department of Justice, will begin as a pilot program in 10 cities that will be selected. Operation TIPS, involving 1 million workers in the pilot stage, will be a national reporting system that allows these workers, whose routines make them well-positioned to recognize unusual events, to report suspicious activity. Every participant in this new program will be given an Operation TIPS information sticker to be affixed to the cab of their vehicle or placed in some other public location so that the toll-free reporting number is readily available.
For all of you out there who wanted a career in law enforcement but couldn't pass the physical, here's a chance to be a Junior G-Man. If you have a job on a trash truck, your services could be particularly valuable. Even if you're just a busybody, here's a chance to turn everday gossip and rumour into solid patriotism. Everyone can help flood busy investigators with tips and "leads". They even give you a free sticker for participating.
