| Scaring Kids as a Public Service | You've probably seen this "public service" announcement...a scared little boy sits on the stairs listening to his daddy smacking his mommy around... the idea being to show Americans that witnessing domestic violence damages little kids emotionally. No one is learning that lesson faster than the children who watch this commercial. I know a certain three-year-old boy who runs to the television when this commercial comes on and turns it off, then stands in front of the TV on guard lest someone should want to turn the commercial back on. Another little girl, an almost two-year-old, runs terrified to her mommy when she sees this ad come on the screen. Mommy quickly changes the channel. With October being Domestic Violence Awareness month, little children are seeing this disturbing ad on just about every station. Little kids who would otherwise have no concept of spousal abuse are getting exposed to it through this TV ad, courtesy of our donations and tax dollars. Is this really a necessary tool for ending family violence? The little kid in the commercial deserves an Oscar if he was just acting like he was upset about what he was witnessing. Looks to me like they set this poor little boy on a sound stage with some actors behaving badly on the sidelines and just let nature take it's course. How many "takes" do you figure were needed to elicit the desired response from the child actor? And what do you figure the auditioning process was like for this role? If you have concerns about this ad, contact the FVPF and the AdCouncil and let them know how you feel. |
